A Last Minute Plea To Be Picked in Tonight's NHL Draft

Image
I'm still in the midst of my post-collegiate job search so tonight is a big night. This evening in Dallas is the NHL Entry Draft. I know I'll be watching, but I'll also be making sure that my phone is within reach. Another year, another chance to realize my dream of being drafted by an NHL team. Sure, I haven't played an actual competitive game in four years, and those games were in Pennsylvania high school hockey, but I'm not saying I expect to be drafted in the first round. I think third or fourth is pretty reasonable though. Senior year of high school I lead the team in assists while wearing the "C" (can you say leadership qualities?). Yeah, I took four years off to attend college but now I have a Bachelor's Degree in Radio-Television with a minor in creative writing so that probably helps my chances like it does for any job. There's some video of me playing on YouTube. I'll concede that it's of me turning the puck over on ...

How I Came To Be A Golden Knights Fan (And It's Not Because They're In The Stanley Cup Final)

I watched as the team was selected at the NHL Awards (in Las Vegas fittingly) and when the thirty picks had been made, headlined by Marc-Andre Fleury (who despite being a Pittsburgh Penguin for his entire career, I have had a signed picture of him in my room since I was like ten years-old. Thanks Uncle Jon!), I thought to myself, that group doesn't look too bad. Now, don't mistake that las...

The Deja Vú of NHL Outdoor Games (And Why I'm Fine With It)

Image
The NHL has announced some of the upcoming outdoor games, and as per usual, people are griping about the participants. Let’s start with the 2019 NHL Winter Classic. The plan is to pit the Chicago Blackhawks against the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame Stadium. I’m actually fine with this matchup and I especially like the venue because I think the NHL needs to do more neutral site games (even though in this instance, the proximity to Chicago means it’ll essentially a home ice advantage for the Blackhawks). The internet has been awash with “Blackhawks again?!?!” comments. I get that argument; the league seems to really love throwing some faux-back sweaters on Kane and Toews and shoving them outside. The obvious reason why the league does this? The Blackhawks sell tickets, and more importantly, bring strong TV ratings. While the NHL has stepped up the number of outdoor games that they put on in each season, they’re still a bit of a novelty and usually do well as far as ticket ...
