A New Season Of Tiger King Is On The Way, Long After Anyone Cared About Tiger King
Looking back on the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of us have one shared memory. It's not of gathering supplies or the fear that came from the pandemic swallowing the earth. No; the one thing we all remember is watching a Netflix documentary series about a merry band of cat-loving lunatics called Tiger King.
Tiger King told the story of zoo owner joe Exotic and the trouble he found himself in for allegedly trying to hire someone to kill the Grand Pooba of Crazy Cat Ladies, Carole Baskin, who is herself alleged by some to have killed her late husband.
It was a wildly entertaining documentary series, that was the biggest thing in the world in late-March/early April of 2020. Then, like anything that starts out fun, it was run into the ground. Endless news stories and pontificating talking-heads inundated our TVs, think pieces (like this one. whoops) filled our social media feeds, and then came the death knell: the parody songs that became huge on TikTok.
By the Summer of 2020, the show had completely run its course, and while the subjects of the documentary tried to prolong their fifteen minutes in the spotlight. we, the documentary-binging public, completely stopped giving a shit.
Now, in the homestretch of 2021, a new season of Tiger King is on the way, and I'm dreading it.
Don't get me wrong, I'll probably watch it because I'm a hypocritical ass, but it's going to feel like when a distant relative gifts you something like that you used to like when you were a kid, but now you're nineteen. Yeah, this would've been cool years ago, but now this whole situation is just sad.
What new developments are there to cover? That the one guy with meth-mouth (I might need to be more specific about which one) got new teeth?
Now, I distinctly remember that after the initial success of the first season a second was announced only it was going to cover Sigfried and Roy and that time one of their tigers decided it had enough of their flamboyant magical trickery.
That would've been something I'd be into, although I don't know how well it would carry an entire season. Basically, their act more or less went off without a hitch for decades until it one day didn't. Credits. That's the story.
I'd still watch it.
Tiger King season two is nothing but a transparent cash grab, and I kind of respect it. I have this split feeling when companies do this sort of thing. I hate that they're seemingly insulting my intelligence, but I kind of like that they're essentially saying to the public, "Yeah, we know there's not much here, but you idiots will still watch it.
Whatever the case, I'm sure when the new season airs we'll all be talking about it, and that's kind of the point.
